Compassion

The common thinking around compassion is to be nice to me, to placate my ego. But it turns out that your ego is your worst enemy, and anybody being nice to it isn't being compassionate to you. It's like giving an alcoholic friend a drink because he really wants one. Real compassion, informed by wisdom, draws a line between good and bad.
